Skagafjörður
Sauðárkrókur, (pop. 2,610) a town at the head of Skagafjörður, authorized
trading place since 1857, obtained its municipal charter in 1947. The
main occupations are trading, fishing and light industry, including a rock
wool factory.

Community centre. Secondary school serving the northwest
of the country. Hydro-electric power plant on the river Gönguskarðsá.
Steadily developing harbour construction.

Airport at Borgarsandur. Boat trips from here to the island Drangey.

Málmey (Island)
An Island with steep cliffs of Sléttuhlíð, 2,4 km2, max. height 156m. Grassy and good pasture for sheep. The farm there was abandoned in 1951.

According to legend there is a spell on Málmey so that neither mice nor horsens wil thrive there and no married couple should live on the island for longer than twenty years of the wife will dissappear and never be seen again. Folk tales tell of just such occurrences.

Drangey (Island)
(200m) a rocky tuff island, grassy on top, difficult to climb. Birdhunting and egg-collecting. Uninhabited. Famous from Grettis saga, as Grettir the strong had a hide-out there, where he and his brother Illugi were slain. Boat trips from Sauðárkrókur
